38% IT sector employees are women

BANGALORE: Safety of women working on night shifts has become an issue, with many instance of violence against them in the recent past. The IT industry is in particular focus, with women forming 38% of IT/BPO companies.

Today, 50% of women work in night shift, among them 71.7% have expressed safety at the workplace. Agreeing that the recent incidents of crime on women working in night shift call for ensuring safety at workplace, state women and child development minister P M Narendraswamy and told the participants of a seminar on Tuesday that the state government will pass a legislation on this issue soon.

In the organized sector, IT industry has more women employees , as having women on board is business imperative at all levels. IT and BPO companies have 38% of women work force, of which 20% are from the IT sector. And recently NASSCOM has started gender inclusive programme with the vision of having 50% of women employees , explained Sucharita Eashwar , NASSCOM regional director.

Karnataka government prohibits employment of women in offices that work from 8 pm to 6 am, barring sectors like IT, biotechnology, media, hospitals, railways and airport. Similar acts passed by other states were widely opposed by the participants, as such initiatives only deprive job opportunities for women in hospitality, entertainment and retail sectors.

WAKE-UP CALLS

August 6, 2005: A cab driver threw acid on the face of a 22-year-old woman working at a BPO in Pune, when she resisted his advances. December 13, 2005: Pratibha Srikantamurthy, a HP globalsoft employee in Bangalore, was raped and murdered by the cab driver. November 3, 2007: Jyothikumari, a Wipro BPO employee in Pune, was raped and murdered by her driver.

RESOLUTIONS PASSED

Request Centre to enact comprehensive legislation enforcing all the guidelines laid down by SC. States need to review the laws which prohibit women working in night shift. State needs to sensitise the police officers with the help of NCW, lawyers, NGOs to ensure security and safety of women working in night shifts. All sectors must adopt genderfriendly polices. NCW need to be regularly updated about the issues related to women working in night shifts.

Credit crisis: IT cos may cut 25K jobs

BANGALORE/NEW DELHI: The banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) segment is the largest outsourcing vertical for Indian technology players. The space contributes up to 40 per cent of the revenues for some top IT firms.

The industry employs around 3,50,000 people in the BFSI space of which the top six players alone account for 180,000 jobs. The domain accounted for $10 billion of the total $32 billion revenues the industry posted during the last fiscal.

What’s happening in the global financial markets can result in the loss of as many as 20,000 to 25,000 jobs in India. That means, the likes of Cognizant, TCS, Infosys, HCL, Wipro and Satyam will announce huge layoffs over the next couple of quarters.

According to Dr Naresh Malhan, MD, Manpower India , about 9 per cent of the people employed in the BFSI, insurance, IT and ITeS sectors in India risk losing their jobs as a result of the financial meltdown. However, he says the overall market remains robust, with other sectors like manufacturing and construction still very promising.

Not everyone shares this view. “Many firms will also use the present economic environment as an excuse to cut flab,” says Uday Chawla, managing Partner, Transearch, India. “Letting go of people in good times is not acceptable, but is sure to escape media scrutiny in the current climate,” he adds.

But what is a threat for some, is an opportunity for others. “Merrill Lynch and Lehman are respected for the quality of talent they attract and train. It’s an opportunity for small firms desperate for quality leadership,” says Sanjiv Sachar, partner, Egon Zehnder.

“Candidates are insisting on protection clauses, with employment letters guaranteeing 1 or 2 years salary. This is more the rule than the exception today. There is a greater play on variable pay in this high-risk environment,” adds Sachar. “Economy is growing at 8 per cent. The layoffs in the financial services will make skills available to other sectors which are facing a leadership crunch,” agrees R Sankar, head-HR consulting practice at PwC.

HP India to cut 1,000 jobs?

BANGALORE: Hewlett-Packard’s decision to eliminate nearly 25,000 of its 320,000 jobs worldwide is expected to have a significant impact on its Indian operations too.

Analysts in India believe that in the short term, the company could see off some 1,000 people, and that in a three year period this could go up to 6,000 of its nearly 60,000 people in the country.

The computer and printer maker’s job cuts come as part of its plan to integrate Electronic Data Systems (EDS), the computer services giant that HP acquired for $13.9 billion in August as part of an effort to match IBM in the services space.

Following the acquisition, a workforce reduction was seen as inevitable, but the figure HP has announced is way beyond anybody’s expectations.

Kapil Dev Singh, managing director of research firm IDC India, said HP’s announcement mostly stems from the global economic scenario. “It’s an instant fall out of what’s happening on Wall Street. The IT accounts of banking and financial institutions (BFSI) have been shrinking. So hiring for this space has been put on a slow burner by global companies,” he said.

Mohan Lal Menon, managing director of strategy advisory firm Sentient, said a lot of overlapping was expected with the integration of HP and EDS Mphasis (in India, EDS had previously acquired Mphasis).

“Most of it would have been in the areas of HR, administration, sales and marketing. But the trigger for HP is definitely the precarious conditions in the BFSI space across the US, Europe and Asia. HP seems to be ahead of the curve, towards planning for the economic downturn,” he said.

Till the time of going to print, HP had not responded to questions sent by TOI on the impact HP’s workforce reduction move would have on India.

However, a senior official at Mphasis said no immediate impact was expected on Mphasis. “We have been hiring junior to top talent. We have been expanding our footprint across the country. So its business as usual,” he said.
